    New Meybauer EK1 Fake?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/IRON-CROSS-1ST-C...QQcmdZViewItem
Photos are crap, but it doesn't look like a Meybauer to me....

Doug, I am not to sure. It's hard to tell from the photos but the beading at the inner corners looks like my screwback. also where I can make it out on the outer corners. I do not have a pin back to compare BUT the thing that bothers me about it is how deeply set the makers marks are. Not as neatly marked as I would have liked and we know they liked to mark everything. Mine has 4 different marks on it and I think Tony (and Kaiser) has one with even more marks.

      Hi,

Hard to say from these pics. I'd really have liked to see a pic with the pin down - that pic would have said a lot and the absence of that pic may be deliberate to hide a good fake. The core is different to all the Meybauer EK1s I own but as Meybauer were fairly prolific manufacturers of these for a longish period, it's quuite possible they used more than one core (I personally don't recall seeing evidence for this though). The beading looks similar to my Meybauers but imo the pics aren't good enough to be definitive. Too hard for me to call with the pics provided.

          I saw this too....

The price is definitely right (it could get to NZ$600.00 and still be right) and the piece is good.

That's a Meybauer for sure. The "W" is very typical. I got additional photos of the meybauer on eBay, and I'm still not sure it's good. The maker marks are just too deep and rounded off and the core doesn't look like the commonly seen one. Then again, it could be good, but the photos are just not good.

By the way, what's this talk of items getting to NZ and still being good? There is a big well known dealer in New Zealand who has been buying up a lot of badges on eBay from the boyz in Latvia badges and our Nazi-boy video king in Chicagoland, and that stuff ain't good. That should make you New Zealanders very cautious about buying from this dealer if he's not re-selling them as repros.

                Hi Doug

The point I was making was currency related... $600 NZ dollars would still be a fair price for that screwback. Have you seen our exchange rate lately?

I don't think we expect just 'cos it managed to get this far 'down under' that it must therefore be original...

                  Gidday Doug,

Please, please, please, put me out of my misery and tell me the name of the dealer.

                  Thanks,

                    Thanks,
His eBay name is nzolives. Has purchased fake badges from the Latvian or Russian sellers kuldiga2, ww2_finder (including a fake Spanish Cross with swords), herold595 (a fake monger supposed selling from Sweden, but his stuff looks like the usual eastern European repro 1870 and 1914 EK1 crap), goodie1111 (who is germn-militaria's shill bid ID), and germn-militaria. This is all public information if you do a search on past auction by seller nzolives and read his feedback. No accusations, cause he may be honestly reselling them as fakes, but the eBay selling prices were not cheap! These sellers are notorious for selling very good fakes as originals, and they're making their way to NZ via this buyer. A NZ friend of mine informed me that nzolives is a large dealer down there.
