    Combat Awards

    Hi

Trying to find what awards would be given in combat for German ground troops in WW1.

    I only know of
    EK1
    EK2
    Wound badge in black.

I am sure there are others.

    Cheers

    German Awards

    eke karl,

There were a host of German awards given to ground troops. Nearly every state, principality, dukedom, etc. had bravery and/or service awards of one type or another. Do you have a more specific need? If not, I'm sure the medal specialists here can suggest websites and books that will tell the whole story.

      Killer Question!

Lots of typing would be required for that one!
Recommend Dave Danner's excellent site for a great starting point.

Awards were rarely given in combat. Usually, they waited at least until after the battle was over. Otherwise, your commander might get distracted by a mortar shell going off and accidentally stick you with the pin while pinning on the medal.

As Chip notes, every state of the German Empire had its own awards, usually awarded to its own citizens and often awarded to other states' citizens as well. In many states, there was a complex award system, and there were multiple awards, depending on rank, previous awards, etc.
