    List of German WW1 Generals

Hi guys, is anyone aware of or does anyone have a comprehensive list with the names of all German Generals that did active service during WW1? Just the names would be sufficient to start with...the list does not need to have any further info...? Is there a website that attempts to contain a database of all German WW1 Generals? Cheers, Torsten.

PS: If the list was to contain Navy Admirals also, then that would of course be a bonus...

    Hi Torstenbel,

I don`t know if this is a comprehensive list but you can check this url:

This site looks like its goal is to have a database of all Brandenburg/Prussian/German generals from 1578 to 1920, but I have no idea how comprehensive it is at this point:

      Lexikon der Deutschen Generale

That is only a select list.

Hi Dave, thank you. That looks to be quite a comprehensive list and certainly is along the lines of what I have been looking for...but it is very expensive and I am still hoping to find a non-commercial site somewhere that does not charge for every click you make on it... unfortunately, the search continuous...Cheers, Torsten.

The list that Marcin has - http://www.deutsche-kriegsgeschichte.de/persreg.html - appears to go down as far as corps commanders, so it will have most of the senior generals, but not a lot of division commanders and staff generals.

If you can read (or at least navigate) French, this site appears to have most if not all generals and admirals of World War One, and not just for Germany:

              http://web.genealogie.free.fr/Les_mi..._1914-1918.htm

There is biographical information on many of these officers, but it is somewhat hard to navigate. Officers are listed by rank, so you need to know the highest rank achieved to find a particular one.

For example, there are 5 Generals von Unger listed. Under Generalmajor, you find "Generalmajor Otto Ernst August von Unger (1862-1915). 15 il meurt." (meaning he was killed in 1915). Under Generalleutnant, you find "Generalmajor puis Generalleutnant Frizt Moritz Lucius Hermann Valerius von Unger (1862-1945)." And under General der..., you find (1) "Generalmajor puis Generalleutnant puis General der Kavallerie Kurt Friedrich Wilhelm Erich von Unger (1859-1931): commandant de la 3 division de cavalerie (I) (02/08/14-)," (2) "Generalmajor puis Generalleutnant puis General der Kavallerie Ernst Karl Friedrich von Unger (1831-1921)." and (3) "Generalmajor puis Generalleutnant puis General der Kavallerie Wolfgang Ludwig Otto Wilhelm von Unger (1855-1927): commandant de la 14 division de réserve (02/08/14-)." If you didn't already know a first name, you wouldn't know which was which.

And none of these generals is on the list Marcin linked to. Elsewhere on that site, though, are lists by commands, so if you were looking for who commanded a particular field army or corps, you could check there: http://www.deutsche-kriegsgeschichte.de/kmdost.html

By the way, that site is a good resource not just for World War One. There are also lists for World War Two and other periods.

For World War Two generals, there is also the English-language database here: http://www.generals.dk/

To get a complete and comprehensive list you need to 1914 Prussian Rangliste, the 1918 Prussian Seniority List and the Honor Rangliste. These books will detail the information you need. The only problem is you are talking about $475 to purchase these 3 books. The 1914 PRL is easy to find. The HRL and 1918 SL are much harder to find.
