    Hanseatic Cross for Lubeck

    Hello All:

This is a recent pickup for my collection. It has enamel damage, but I thought I would share. As always, I appreciate any comments.

Despite the enamel damage it's a nice cross!

Lubeck is the my favorite out of the three Hanseatic crosses. In spite of the damage it's a nice cross.

Agreed, not an easy one to find in any condition.

Are the talons and tongues red?

The talons are red, but it’s hard to capture in a picture. The tongues of the eagles are really hard to tell.

My Luebeck Cross was mounted on a medal bar long ago. The talons and nostrils are distinctly red, but the tongues are not.

I don’t see any red in the nostrils. Do you think it’s a reproduction? Is it possible that it was repainted?

The cross is as original as it gets. It's possibly one of the best examples of the Luebeck Cross in original condition I've seen.

How many of these crosses have you seen in your travels? The medallions of the originals were sprayed in gold lacquer and the black eagles were silk-screened onto the surface. If anything, your eagle looks like somebody touched it up with some black paint at some point. Note the crusty black paint on your medallion.

Here's a close-up of the nostrils and a good detail-view of how the silk-screened eagles should look unretouched.

Hi Ron, I guess I'm not understanding which one of the red areas you're referring to. Your medallion is pierced-through for the talons and the red enamel underneath is thereby made visible. Your silk-screened eagle is also in its original, untouched state with no retouching of the black areas having taken place. A very nice cross, indeed !!
