Dragoner-Regiment Bromberg?

Hello all,

here are several photos of a great-granduncle of mine: the first two from ca. 1908-1910, the third one from WW1.
The first pic was taken in Bromberg. Could this be the Gren.-Reg. zu Pferde Frhr. v. Derfflinger (3. Dragoner-Reg.)?

Your relative was most likely in the field artillery. There appears to be a cypher on the shoulder board on the prone NCO with the shooting award which may help you out identifying the unit. BTW, the senior NCO with the double braiding on the cuff is a nice touch!

Dave's right, it is field artillery, specifically the 2.Pommersches Feldartill.-Regt.Nr.17, garrisoned in Bromberg (II.A.K.).

Many thanks to you both! I was told that he was a "Meldereiter" (dispatch rider) at some point, did they have Meldereiter in the field artillery?

I would think any unit that had horses could have dispatch riders. Infantry, on the other had, would more likely have runners. These would have been temporary assignments rather than ranks or official positions.

Grave photo 1918

His name was Emil Reich. He survived WW1. His elder brother, Wilhelm Reich (my great-grandfather), was a Feldwebel in WW1, too. Here - I saved this treasure for last - both are standing at the grave of their third brother Erich:



I think Wilhelm (left, also with EK2) was in the field artillery, too.
What surprises me here, is that Emil doesn't seem to wear the usual NCO uniform. It looks very plain.

I have two large photos of two brothers who died in the Somme battle within two weeks of eachother that I picked up outside of Fuessen in Bavaria. They are very nice and framed and one of them is a portrait painting rather than a photo. The photo one has the soldier full body shot with a Bavarian Merit Cross.

The soldier on the right in the picture does not show any visible signs of having an NCO rank. I appears that all three brothers were in the field artillery.

Very poignant photo and quite a nice family heirloom.
