We can't make this comparison with the Widerholungspangen, but it was great when I got my hands on this photo and a couple of others and could clearly see this was his AWARDED piece. The flaking heavy patina is NOT on this EKII. Perhaps a function of silver percentage, care, climate...

Here's a full photo of the medalbar which could have been Leo's as he fought in the 1866 War. Unquestionably authentic EKII. Heavily patinated.
These are some of the evidential characteristics I look for in detemining authenticity when a photo of something as tiny as the Wiederholungspange will never reveal. Honest age...Comment

As nicely finished as these little beauties are, I was always concerned about the
unfinished appearence of the edges of the cross on mine. Seeing yours Brian and your explanation of the sheer marks from the die stamping puts me more at ease with mine.

In addition to the number of these pieces made for known awardees (and their duplicate examples), consider also a certain number that might have been made in anticipation of further awardings (and thus further duplicate examples) which never occurred. Remember, WW1 went on longer than most people anticipated -- and it ended (in the eyes or many) somewhat suddenly.GeorgeComment

Wonderfull pics and good analysis.
It seems that we sometimes go just a little over the top with our paranoya with fakes and that a great many clasps have gone through because some of us (myself included) were too scared to pick'em up. But, I still think that in order to be happy with one of these, you have to see one for sale with a guy you trust or a dealer you know, so there isn't a chance to get screwd with your pants on. I'd be willing to buy one only when there are great pics provided by the seller and a chance for a long discussion here.AnttiComment

The more you look, the more you'll see....
Take for example the area I've named the 'cats footprint' on mine and yours.
Again - just so we're clear - I'm making no assumptions at this point other than that I feel we all have (or had) matching obverses.

Now to try and find out what - if any - differences there are between our pieces and these....
Unless the price goes crazy at the last minute, I'm intending to buy this piece so I can study the detail, construction, possible signs of casting etc... and try and get some answers which we can work with.
Unless you feel this is a legitamate piece and you want it in your collection, I would really appreciate it if anyone planning on bidding on this would PM me so we do not bid each other out of the water!!.
I will withdraw immediately if any friends here are legitimately planning to chase this one.
