    Navy wound badge

I have searched the internet for advice on fakes of the Imperial Navy wound badges, and I must admit I cant really get the touch of it from looking at photos. So I need your Gent`s opinion on this badge, is it good or bad. And if its bad what "clues" or details should I look for?

        Hi Carl,
I have to say that of all of my wound badges, none are Navy so my experience with them is limited. I will say that this one gives me a good first impression. The badge and pin are steel, and the hinge and catch are brass...correct? So unless proven otherwise I give it two .

Thanks for your comment! Correct, the badge & pin is steel and the hinge and catch is brass.

You are very welcome. I would like to add that most (not all) of the fake Navy badges have been of the silver and gold variety (for obvious reasons). They usually incorporate the correct style of hinge, but often use a very thin needle, and very wide and "blocky" clasp. I have over 30 wound badges, Imp. & TR, but have never really been crazy about these because I really have no Marine-related interests.

              Hi Carl,

This example doesn't look too bad. The hinge/pin/catch seems acceptable for Imperail Wound Badges and the detail on the badge isn not too bad. The fact that the badge is steel is a good sign. I prefer a higher degree of vault but I don't see anything that rings alarm bells.

There are definitely repros of all grades of the Marine Wound Badge in circulation. There are two types of repros that are fairly common at present. One is based (or struck) from a damaged S&L die (it has "lumps" between some of the chain links) and the other is a more recent repro based on the ugly Assmann version of the badge but struck or plated in copper.

              Regards
              Mike K

                Carl,

Your badge is a new one for me. At first glance it looks to be good. The more I look at it some things beg questions that need to be answered.

To me the beading looks a bit large and some of the anchor details are different. The curvature of the back of the right hand fluke instead of it being straight is most obvious after the beading size. I checked the four examples I have and also Bill Hammelman's book on German Wound Badges and can't come up with a identical match.

Your NWB seems to have a combination of type I and type II features but not exact matches of either one. What is certain is that it doesn't match the type III wound badge.Another makers variation maybe?

The attachment hardware looks to be fine and properly placed. The materials steel body and pin with a brass hinge and catch are okay. The fact that the badge doesn't seem to show age where the paint is missing is a bit puzzling. The base metal seems too freshly exposed or bright IMO.

I would like to see clearer pictures of the badge face on, especially the beading details if possible. If you can post height and width dimensions and the weight if possible, that would be very helpful.

Interesting badge to say the least. Don't really know what else to say about it at the moment. I would love to see it in hand. I can send you some pictures of the ones I have if you PM me a mailing address. Sorry no digital camera yet so I can't post the pics.

                Tony

In my opinion this badge is original.
