    Mackensen Medallion

Anyone ever seen one of these before? I picked it up for £20 from a UK dealer last week, and now I see a cased one on a US site for almost $500.

Never seen one before, and now 2 in a week.

Great finds, Robin. Does anybody has an idea, where von Mackensens awards ended up? In a museum somewhere?

              Gerd.

The photo below shows what purports to be von Mackensen's uniform and decorations. They are in the Wehrgeschichtlichesmuseum at Rastatt.

And this reconstruction gives an idea of how splendid these uniforms must have looked at the time......

Is that you Robin? I have been to the Wehrgeschichtlichesmuseum at Rastatt about 40 times. I went every month from 1981 to 1984 and have been back every time I visit Deutschland. I have stood with my face pressed against the glass 6 inches from von Mackensen's uniform and decorations. They are reported to be his and I believe it. They are mind-numbing to see up close. The quaility is unbelievable.

                    von Mackensen

                    Robin,

A quantity of von Mackensen's stuff is at the Bavarian army museum in Ingolstadt. Back in 1978 I held his overcoat in my hands. The field marshall's boards were out of this world. They had one of his outfits on display and in storage his trunk complete with silver nameplate and full of more of his uniforms. I have a picture of my self holding his greatcoat and an enlisted Leib Husar visored cap (mint condition) that was on the floor near the trunk (though obviously not his).

Now that I've cleaned this little beauty up, it's clearly stamped 'Silber 990' on the rim, with 'S.50.' and the sculptor's name, 'Blichmann'.

It's heavy, and the quality is stunning. You can almost see the letters on the PLM!

Anyone seen another? I think this must be some kind of limited edition. The 'Marschall Vorwaerts' suggests that it's from WW1, or the 20s. Mackensen was known as the 'New Bluecher', hence that wording. The inscription on the back, in his handwriting, is 'Trust in God and Your Own Strength'.
