God Protects You! But what is it?

Greetings all,
A good friend of mine recently gave me this very unique item, and I have a feeling there's something special about it.
The reverse is finished, so it's not a normal pin or badge.
It appears to be die-struck and is made of 990 silver.
Width is 29mm, so too small to be a medal of some sort, and there's no evidence of a suspension ring having been ground off.
Tony & Kaiser suspects it may be a commemorative coin of some sort, with a jeweler added pin & catch.
Any comments would be much appreciated!

My thoughts as well, with the additional thought that the empty space on the back was probably meant to be engraved with the soldier's name and carried with him while in service.
