                        Well, they used as for most other decorations a stencil. Those changed over time, besides very manufacturer had its one. Those of course did vary slightly.

                          Would love to hear more about the piece with the rosette! Awarded to a French national with his own interpretation of how to wear awards perhaps? I'm intrigued.

                              Dear Andreas, Thanks for the information on the Castle paintings . WEM...no idea on the rosette piece, it came that way when I purchased it .
