    did you know ...........

    Hello,

    Here is some info that many off us never have heard off : Did you know that before the Oak leaves towards the famous " Pour Le Merite " order where instituted on 10.03.1813 it was possible to receive 2 or even 3 PLM and wear them at the same time on the uniform !!!!!!

    for 2 awarded PLM's one was worn around the neck ( usual place ) and the second one was to be worn trough the buttonhole => offcoarse with the institution of the above named Oak leaves this practice did end and the Oak's where attached

      PLM

      Hello,

      No Ricky I was not drunk when typed the above, it is interesting info found when reading in literature

      Another point of interest ( + that is often overlooked ) is the difference between the following prefix zum and mit

      Let me explain this a little more into detail , for example

      1 ) Generalleutnant Johan Ludwig David Graf von Yorck received the " Eichenlaub zum PLM " , this means he received his first PLM on 18.06.1907 and his second one ( => in the form of the Oak leaves ) on 10.06.1813 !!!!!!! ( = a later date + after the institution of the oak leaves )

      2 ) Prinz Karel Friedrich August von Mecklenburg - Strelitz was the first recipient of the " PLM mit Eichenlaub " on 09.10.1813 , meaning he received both awards on the same date !!!!!!!!

      We can find the following numbers in literature ( for the Wars of 1813 - 1815 )

      a) Eichenlaub zum PLM : 40 times awarded

      b) PLM mit Eichenlaub : 33 times

      after these wars the following persons received also the PLM mit Eichenlaub :

      * 14.01.1816 : Oberst Friedrich August Ludwig von der Maarwitz

      * 05.11.1828 : Generalmajor Graf Ferdinant von Nostitz

      * 18.12.1846 : Prinz Friedrich Wilhelm Karl von Preussen

      * 01.09.1884 : Furst Otto von Bismarck

      * 30.07.1901 : Generalfeldmarschall Alfred Ludwig Heinrich Karl Graf von Waldersee

      * 28.08.1914 : Kaiser Franz Joseph I ( Austria - Hungaria )

      * 08.09.1916 : King Ferdinand I ( Bulgaria )

      It is quite clear that one could not make the difference between a ricipient of the " Eichenlaub zum PLM " or the " PLM mit Eichenlaub " and therefore a new Kabinets Order stated that from 17.12.1817 a special Band was to be worn togheter with the " Eichenlaub zum PLM " to make the distinction . This special band had a extra silver stripe ( about 8 mm ) sewn into the normal PLM band.

      Cordial Greetings and hoping to add something to the knowledge

        stijn for harvard

        Hello Professor stijn,

        a very interesting story about the PlM.

        The special band with an extra silver stripe ( about 8 mm ) sewn into the normal PLM band was th standard ribbon for the second award. You could see this ribbon for the PlM with oakleaves from General Lequis - sold by Kube.

        And the red eagle and crown order had this silver stripe, too, when a man at example got first the crown order 4. class with swords and then the crown order 3. class with swords. The ribbon is called "am zweimal weiß und dreimal schwarz gestreiften Band".

        I didn't know, that the recipent of the "PlM mit Eichenlaub" wears only the normal ribbon.

        Thank you very much

        Werner
