Oakleaves serve the role for the 2nd Class that the bow does for the 3rd Class.

If I may say so, this bar is one of the best I’ve seen for a while. The Langensalza medal appears to be virtually flawless which is unusual as, for some reason, these guys seem to be very vulnerable to discoloring.

This could well be an officer’s “basic” bar. Let me explain. Beyond these decorations, this recipient could have been awarded orders of lesser states in, say, officer’s or commander’s grades. Although officer’s grade awards are not very likely, as most of these were founded after the service/life of this recipient as indicated by this group.

Also, the Red Eagle 3rd class with bow on the bar does not necessarily mean the end of the line of awards of this order. For some reason, Red Eagle’s 3rd and 4th class on bars are often seen along with higher grades, For example, I have a picture of Generalfeldmarshall v. d. Goltz showing a Red Eagle 4th class with swords on his bar, a Red Eagle 2nd class with swords on ring (button hole) and a Red Eagle grand cross with swords on ring at the neck. Also, there exists a great picture of Kaiser Wilhelm II, ca. 1890, showing a Red Eagle 3rd class on his bar and a Red Eagle grand cross at the neck - Tony Colson, if you are reading this, you know the one.

I apologize if I’ve rambled a bit. Too bad the Langensalza medal is not named - I just have a hunch that there could well be more. A great group with the matching ribbon bar (!).

Possible match

I checked the 1895 and 97 RL and no match. I have to go back to 92 and 93. I'll keep you posted..

After talking with "The Master" I don't think it will be possible to ID this guy. My initial thought was that he was in a Hannoverian Regiment, but that may not be the case. He could have been in any Prussian regiment. The only way to ID the guy is to look at every Colonel for a match and reference it back to a Hannover State and Court book from 1865.

I thought I had him. I just got a snap in from detlev with what appears to be this combination of medals-but without the LS cross (no bars either, but those could be later than the photographed medal bar)-but there's a Koniggratz medal.
I'll try to scan and show it.
