    award documents

I bought form 2 old german sisters a photo of their father in uniform ww1 with his iron cross second class and 2 award documents one for the iron cross dated 1917 the other stamped with a 1935 nazi stamp for a hindenberg cross. also the iron cross with ribon he is waring. i would like to keep the iron cross but would like to trade the documents and photo for 3rd reich medals. . also if it is worth more for me to sell the iron cross and get a nother one. to replace it? how much should something like this be worth? here is the link to the pics

    keep the set togheter

    Hi,

My opinion is never to splitt up a grouping ( and Im sure otehrs will follow me in this ) , those are not high value award + documents, etc ..

1 ) so from a financial point of vieuw you wil not get much Zinc stuff for it in return .

2 ) keep them togheter as a remembrance and dedication towards this brave German soldier who was certainly quite proud of his EK II

3 ) Splitting it up would be monstrous IMHO so keep it togheter or sell it togheter

    Cordial Greetings,
my collectionfield : German glider pilots

There were FIVE MILLION 1914 EK2s-- a loose, anonymous one can be found anywhere, at any show.

That was THIS MAN'S Cross, given for the exact action and at the exact time and place research on the the document would reveal. Having a PHOTO of this man is even better. There is no group more COMMON than a WW1 EK2 and a Hindenburg Cross. But nowadays, to have the awards, the documents, AND the man's "face" IS uncommon, and worth keeping.

Having been kept together for over 80 years, it would be horrible to split them apart. We honor the soldiers, not the tin and cloth. The personal human story that documents reveal is of greater "value" to collectors, not in money but in remembrance of history, than a loose lump of cast iron.

It would be exceptionally nice framed as a group, helping to preserve them. Then again, if both elderly daughters are here, WHERE was the Hindenburg Cross issued? Here in America? Yes, they WERE issued to German immigrants who applied to local consular offices. An American (or any overseas) Hindenburg Cross document is worth far more than one of the 6 million to any old veteran back in Germany.

Think about it a bit, and you will see that the "PAPER" is the more important part of the group. An Iron Cross is just an Iron Cross-- but an original set is history preserved. As a SET, this GROUP has MORE value, if all that matters is money, than broken up for all time into single pieces. I have owned many dozens of groups-- and out of them all, probably only 4 or 5 came with any photo of the original recipient.

Don't split the group up. You can get a loose EK2 anywhere.
