Hi there, I have got this photograph of a group of German officers. One of them is wearing some kind of medal box on his chest? What is this? Can anyone explain? Cheers and thanks for your help. Torsten.

Well we've all seen Prinzen-sized medals and badges. Could this be an extremely rare Kaiser-sized Schnalle?
All jokes aside--perhaps it is some sort of ID device used by observers during maneuvers? The structure could be an observation platform. Notice the pipes (telegraph cable inside?).Comment

Richard, I prefer the train conductor idea... but, I was going to suggest that this may be his personal radiation counter/monitor and it just shows that the Germans were once again lightyears ahead of everyone else... however, I would still like to know what it is that he is wearing there really...no-one ever seen anything like it???
