What were the qualifications for the different grades of the Johanitterorden?

None of these medals seem to have the swords that the kaisers has?

Wilhelm had a lot of gongs, but he always wore his Johanniterorden insignia, of which he was very proud.

Uwe provided a response that in fact permits a simple google search - first hit (if as per Goggle's suggestion, you split "Protector" and "Kreuz") yields this site (in English!), which I think provides the detail various participants of this thread are looking for:

On the thread starter, it notes: "Unique decoration of a Sovereign Protector of the Royal Prussian Order of St.John (Protektordekoration) was issued only once on August 23, 1888 to the German Emperor Wilhelm II."

Seek, and ye shall find is one of the cornerstones of this hobby (and in fact one of the most enjoyable parts of it, as much fun has the hunt for that elusive, missing item ....)
