...von der Firma Benz & Comp.

Check it out, not long ago added this cigarette case to my collection.
It's made in a form of a car radiator.

...radiator cap is the button to open it.

Benz emblem on the case was used by the company up to 1916.

The case was given to pilot instructor Franz Lowenthal.
I wonder if anyone have any info on that name.

Looks like engraving was filled with white paint or something which is kind of yellow by now, in some letters little parts of it falling out.

At first wasn't sure if EK was a part of original design, but found picture of an other one, this one got most of it's gold plating worn out and that same EK is there too.

Benz company was making engines for cars and planes, here are some exampeles of their plane engines and picture of the plane with it.

That is a very very cool piece.
I've never seen one before but if I had seen it at a show,
I would have bought it on the spot.

I agree, beautiful engraving on a very cool piece. I'm guessing Loewenthal was possibly a works pilot at Mannheim.

There apparently was a Vizefeldwebel Franz Loewenthal in Kagol 3 - I’ve not read the second link in full, will do so later

                        From the second website

"Gotha of Bosta 17 crashed taking off from Mariakereke aerodrome.
Vfw. Franz Löwenthal (born Tettnang 10.3.1895). Pilot. Seriously injured, died of injuries 28.5.1918. Buried Ghent Wester Cemetery.
Vfw. Max Boese (born Stettin 18.4.1887). Gunner. Fatally injured, died same day. Now buried in the Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof at Vladslo in Belgium."

The Gotha IV had mercedes engines, so who knows, this may be our man.
