    Blunt nosed airship badge

Hi guys , here is an interesting version of the airship commemorative badge with characteristic blunt nose . I have only ever seen three of these in my collecting years ( I have two of them) . It would appear that the man in the pic , although the detail is somewhat blurred, is possibly wearing this variant . I can not zoom in too far without it pixelating beyond use but the nose seems there . Thoughts ?

Admittedly the picture detail is poor but it certainly seems to be a type of badge that has this characteristic. Not seen any other type that has this squared off nose . 30’s or 40’s made ?

Hi Ferg. Based on the picture you provider it seems to be the same shaped badge. Let me have a question - who was qualified to get the badge? Crew from the obesrvation ballons or the Zepellins?

I believe it was just crews from airships / zeppelin, both army and marine . It was a post war ,1920 commemorative piece that the recipient had to apply for and then pay for out of his own pocket . Not sure if there was a separate award for the balloon units . I am sure someone here may know .

The one in the first picture posted doesn't seem to have cut outs.

Maybe ,or maybe it’s the fuzziness of the pic that’s blurred it into one image .

It was for airship crews only; balloon personnel were not eligible and had no equivalent commemorative badge, either.

                    Hi Fergus,

I looked through my database of pictures and found this one. It was offered many years ago at ebay or on a dealers page. I can't remember anymore. I saw more the one of this in the past.

This looks like the navy version of your badge and to be honnest I don't call it a period badge. Possible it is a badge from the Third Reich.

                    Kind regards
                    Alex

That is the same badge that started this thread.

Possibly, I don't like the details of this badge.

You are correct ,it’s the same badge . I covered over the crown for comparative reasons . I have an army version too but this is the better less worn one . I agree that this is certainly a TR period piece given the detail is much less intricate than the earlier pieces and compares well in style with wreaths of WW2 aviation badges .

I will post some more pics of the reverse that leads me to believe this is a TR period badge .

The badge has a lot of TR period Juncker features .
Hinge block has the typical lines/ scores running across as the Juncker EK 1 have .

Catch is also typical Juncker with the characteristic striations along it . My pic does not show it clearly on the zep but it’s there ,just my poor photo skills!
