    Pour le Mérite

    Hello all.

    I'm a long time member over at GHW and WRF and was referred here for some help in reviewing this Pour le Mérite. It is billed as a 1950's "replacement" award and not a collectors copy. I can not tell if the base metal is brass, silver or something else.

    Any thoughts and help is greatly appreciated.

          After reading from beginning to end my head was spinning and I was only able to absorb a portion of it the first go around.

          But what I did absorb, I assume it is fair to say it's a post WW2 "trinket"??? And not as billed (a 1950's replacement award - which sound fishy from the get go)??

          At the moment I have a higher priority for the funds that it would be needed to afford a pre 1918 example LoL. And it would probably not be cheap either to purchase a pre- 1945 example. (If I even could find one or knew where to look).

          I thought this would have been a nice cheap "filler" if it really was as described. But being around the block more than once, I know never to make a purchase where I do not have the sufficient expertise to do so.

            Plm

            These are called a schickle plm. They were made Through the 1930s till 1945. They are nice filler plm if you can't afford a war time plm. I had one a while back. The ribbon isn;t like a plm ribbon it looks like it has white rows to it. Cliff

              Thanks Cobra. If indeed a schickle...what ballpark ranges do these go for. This is all new for me. An area I know little about.

                      I thought Schickle lost their license to produce awards in 1940. If so this would be a 1930-40 piece. Unless they started up again after WW2.

                          Hi Don I don't know about that date but in 1940 catalog they have them showing that they are making them. There is a thread where Gordon Williamson started and he had posted a picture of the catalog showing them for sale. As far them losing their license I don't know . When did otto schickle make the kc if he lost his license ? Cliff

                            Schickle did lose their license to make TR awards around '41 and theory is they sold their stock to Meyer and others.

                            But would this apply to PLM's? Would PLM's be part of the TR area of control?

                              I don't think we've ever explored Schickle in depth wrt their loss of license. Did they still exist after they were shut out of TR medal making?
