I obtained thisn one from the soldier who brough it back in a small box with a bunch of other medals, badges and pins. Unfortunately, it appears to be laquered and as the laquer comes off, so does the very light gilding. The gilding is so pale, it is difficult to get a good photo. It is marked W and 938, I believe.

Hallmark and silver mark. this is the best I could do with a 4X close up lens.

I have always hoped to find a medal bar with this decoration. I would love to see any, if there are some in your collections.

I never noticed the lack of quality in this Wagner piece before. Note the poor trimming of the upper portion of the left (9 O'clock position) arm of the cross. So much for Wagner quality control and I know who brought this back!

Thanks for posting this. If it is real, and I assume it is, I have passed on one of these thinking it was fake. I know where it is so I can go get it. I passed on it due to the poor trimming. I guess better safe than sorry. Does the W look scratched in on more like a stamping? Pretty rare to find on a bar but I think there is one silver one in a collection of a member.

The "W" is clearly and cleanly stamped in. I am just not a talented photographer.

The finish is completely worn away but from what I can see (and I really can't see the maker mark and silver content all that well) the piece looks good to me. The details are not as crisp as I am use to seeing but nevertheless a lot of the appropriate criteria including size are met.

Very interesting here is the fact, that the "T" in "Verdienst" is clean and not like most WWI examples conected to the medallion rim.

The tooling broke early on in WWI and was never replaced. A small piece of the tooling exactly between T and medallion rim must have broken off during coining. Yet, the crack got worse and worse over time.

This one, and again - one need to see it life, would be a very early coinage.
