Godet WHS

Hi everyone,

I'd like to give a shout out to Trevor for helping me identify this WHS as an original Godet product (which helped in my decision to purchase it). Thanks again Trevor! I hope the rest of you like it as well!

Hello Eric,

From my opinion this is an original WHS made by Wagner & Sohn from the last period of WWI,
because this type was made without black enamel in the EK. The later made WHS have only black paint in the middle of the EK.

Wagner and Sohn was the designer of the WHS and the only marker of the officially awarded Spange.
As far as I know Godet never made the WHS during WWI.

Just my opinion and I my very well be wrong butThe style looks correct to me
but the actual piece looks new.

Actually Godet shows WHS in their 1915 catalog. It's hard to compare, but they made those.

Actually Godet shows WHS in their 1915 catalog. It's hard to compare, but they made those.

Interesting, that catalog does show a thin jumpring on the Bavarian Bravery Medal.

Great piece.

Sadly I am not in front of my library, collection or computer, so I can't really do a proper reply. I'll do what I can with photos I can find on hand.

This type, known as a C30 type after its designation in Heyde's famous book on Aurich's WWI-era collection, is a well-known period piece but is different from the award-type Wagner in some major areas, for example the design of the cross elements (date, crown, W), the pebbling, and the thickness of the outer ridged surround. Also I have never seen a Wagner without enamel finishing (I don't think they were made) and original Wagner slipbacks are exceedingly rare if they exist at all. I've never seen an authentic one.

Here is Aurich's C30:

You can see especially the high "4" in the date and the odd "W" that slants upwards and to the right.

This C30 type comes in different types: enameled and painted, full-size or reduced width. I have this one photo showing the three WHS types. Upper left, Wagner award type. Lower left, C30. Right, C30 reduced width:

So who made the C30? It is shown in a scan of a J. Godet catalogue and the design elements are unmistakeable. I don't have the scan at the moment but I will post it when I can. It's somewhere on this forum as I recall.

Lovely original piece, not an award type but probably the only other type made at the time of awarding in my opinion.

Everyone seems to agree that this is an original piece so I hereby
take back my comment questioning it's originality.

But please be warned. I have seen a couple of these on ebay.
I tought I had saved the pictures to my files but I can not seem to
find them. When or if I do, I will post them.
