    Wayne,
I have to admit that I was pretty fast to call the cross a fake. Sorry for that.

I think that your cross might very well have started out as a good S-L
made cross. After comparing the core details of yours to the fakes that
I have on file, the details in your seem much nicer. The fakes that I have
on file all seem to have more rounded, softer edges to the date and W.
Your are fairly flat. Also the core surface on your is much smoother.

I have tried to find other examples of S-L made screwback crosses to compare
the reverse hardware but I have not found any that I can say might be original.
My gut tells me that the cross you posted might be a Frankenstein cross. I can
not say exactly why but I just don't trust the screw attachment. It just seems "off"
to me. I also am really not sure about the DRGM marking. I think it is just
an enhancement but I might be wrong.

If the cross turns out to be good, it would be a very unique piece.

In the picture below, I am attempting to show the difference in the details that I mentioned above.
Your cross is on the left while the other two are from my fakes folder.

      Hi Greg,

Thank you for taking a closer look, When you posted your pictures where you compared those crosses to the I posted I could see differences and hence my question that it may need a closer look.

As I think you have come to same conclusion as me that the core is similar but different, I think the paint is different also,(could be lighting though).

I also think the frames are different, much sharper beading overall , different frame material used? the type of patina silver can develop., The wider distance of the W in relation to the frame especially on the lower right hand side compared to both of the crosses you added. Which is very obvious in the photo you posted below. So different core or frames?

From my pics of the cross showing the side of the frames it seems very narrow, hence my question a one piece cross of very well hand finished as i cannot see a hairline seam.

I found the style of the DRGM interesting, The style of stamping looked to me like it may have belonged of that 20/30/40 era. although nothing seems special about the cross to warrant it.

I mentioned I had not encountered that stamp before on any other crosses also, which raised my interest.

HOWEVER, I do agree with yourself, Mike and Gew and on all of your points, Not worth the risk , I would keep my money in my pocket and did, but still thought it worth a discussion

      Cheers
      Wayne

I think it is a frankenstein piece. There is too much about it that bothers me.

D.R.G.M. registered products were protected either for their way of intended use or design. IMO in this case their is no need to protect the desin or intended use.
