I'm surprised if this group came directly from the family, that there weren't any documents that came with the medals.

Hi,

it happened pretty often, the docs and awards were often in 2 different places. When the wifes Grandmother fled Eastern Germany she took her fathers medals, all his WW1 documents were lost.
