stahlhelm badges

Can anyone tell me please, why some stahlhelm badges have an iron cross on them and some don't?



(i needed a pic to illustrate the badges so found this one through google. Sorry if it belongs to someone)

With EK is for Kernstahlhelm and without for Ringstahlhelm.

fyi: www search teaches us:
the Stahlhelm relegated newer members to the Ring Stahlhelm (non-veterans)
while original veteran members manned the Kern Stahlhelm (core members).

Always an interesting subject: Der Stahlhelm.
Its insignia and headgear I did explain in volume 2 from "Headgear of Hitler's Germany", which was published in 1992.
During a meeting of "Der Stahlhelm e.V" - Kampfbund für Europa, in October 1988, at Gemünd (Eifel) I was handed over one
for the Kernstahlhelm with a special indication, due to my efforts and research for the above mentioned book and a
planned book about the organization! The last was cancelled for various reasons.
