I don't know much about helmets per se. But, IMO, the hand-painted shield indicates that this helmet is probably early Reichswehr, maybe June-September or so, 1919. When the Bavarian Freikorps units like FK Epp evolved into the Reichswehr/Reichsheer, I believe they got shield decals in Bavarian colors (much larger than this) to apply to their helmets. Also, this later shield was angled forward, rather than perpendicular.

Noteworthy '16 shell with an M18 liner....very cool. Do you think the shield is of the period?......I may have some doubts.

IMO the shield is period. Logic would dictate that it's genuine because there's no real advantage to faking a Reichswehr state shield on a helmet, like say a skull or static swastika on the front.

I cant add anything that hasnt already been mentioned, but I do agree with bolewts58's assessment. Reichswehr is collectable, but the money is more with uniforms and hats... its almost better not to get a WW1 era helmet with a shield painted on it because there isnt much to refer to.
