First pattern blackened cast-iron Treukreuz which was later replaced by a better made and more substantial pin-back enameled cross.

Although the first pattern is much rarer than the second pattern, it's worth less on the market, largely because it was poorly made and of a rather small size.

Note that the Freikorps is referred to with the official designation of: 1. Garde Landesschützen-Abteilung.

The Freikorps von Neufville (formally known as 1. Garde Landesschützen-Abteilung and also known as Detachement von Neufville and Schwarze Garde) was formed in December 1918 and was a part of Freiwilligen Landesschützenkorps. It consisted of 650 members.

This Freikorps had more insignia than just about any other unit, including; Guard Star collar badges, shoulderboard devices with a small 'v' and capital 'N' inside a wreath, a cufftitle inscribed - Freiw. 2. GRD, and an arm-badge with a Roman numeral ‘I’ and the letter ‘G’ (for 1.Garde) as well as two awards: the first issue black cast-iron Treukreuz (hated by the troops) and its replacement, a black enameled Steckkreuz.

I have recently acquired a number of items from this unit and would like to share them.

I'll post these so they have some sort of order.

Firstly, 2 postcards.

A scarce photo of Rittmeister Georg von Neufville standing with the banners of the various units within the Freikorps which included an artillery battery and a cavalry squadron.

The second photo is of a group of soldiers from the Freikorps showing the various insignia worn by this unit.

Interesting info about 1st and 2nd pattern, I was always thinking it was 1st and 2nd class? Where did this info come from?
What you're still missing is the armband, and may be this medal

The info about the 2nd pattern replacing the first came from Verkuillen Ager.
I bid on a cuff-title (pic posted here) in a US Nazi memorabilia auction. But, it went crazy because the auctioneer listed it as a rare Gestapo cuff-title.

Nice medal. I'd like it.

I'm also missing the collar badges and arm badge. So, still some ways to go to complete the set.

I'm not sure about the ribbon, either. It's not clear in the photo. But, it's actually 3 thin white stripes on black. It makes sense according to the colors of the unit. But, according to Nimmergut's ribbon book it's 2 golden yellow stripes on green, which makes no sense at all.

Somewhere I have a pic of a group with this cross on it. When I find it, I'll post it. But, if I remember correctly, the ribbon is actually 2 thin white stripes on either side of a black ribbon, which makes mine wrong.

I found the pic of the group and yes, the ribbon on mine is wrong (as is the one in Nimmergut). It will be difficult to find the correct ribbon, unless there are modern replacements available.

At least my cross is in much better condition than this one.

Hmmm, that ribbon in the medal bar above looks like 10 Yr NSDAP long service ribbon? Also, given the medal is not attached to the bar, are you sure it is the right ribbon?

The only thing I can contribute to the thread, a beaten up example missing the pin and with a spinning central device.

So far this spange is the only example with ribbon I have seen also. There is also this ribbon bar, posted on some German forum.

I have this in my files. Hope our German forum mates can translate this exactly? So far I understand that it was in 2 classes awarded depending on time spent in FK? What makes it similar to Loewenfeld cross, condition-wise.

Do you have a better picture of the article about the Treukreuz?

Verkuillen apparently was wrong about this.

From what I can make out, it seems according to this article that it was 2 classes.

2nd class (small cross on ribbon) for 1/2 year service before April 1, 1920 or 3/4 years service before Dec 31, 1920.

1st class (pin-back enamelled cross) + 2nd class for 1 year service before April 1, 1920 or 15 months service, if before Dec 31, 1920.

I think it also says that anyone else who aided the Schwarze Garde between 1918 and 1920 and held another Loyalty Award could be given the Treukreuz after proof of service was given to the Schwarze Garde veteran's association district office.
