    Wwi medal bar

    Hello Imperial Enthusiasts...

This is a WWI Medal Bar. I am trying to confirm that this is more of a commerative or rememberance medal bar. I also can't find anything on GREN RGT 3. Any comments would be appreciated.

There is an odd Ribbon Bar attached on the upper right that is the WWI EK2 and Honor Cross w/ Swords. I have no idea why that is on here. I would assume that if the owner won a EK2 it would be on this parade bar.

    From Left to Right:
    Regiment Rememberance Badge
    Verdun Commemorative Cross
    Kyffhauser Commemorative Medal
    Prussian Commemorative 1914-1918 war

Again, upper right.. odd placement of ribbon bar which I suspect is not authentic to this piece..

    Thank you, Scott

    Hi Scott,

A fine medal bar, everything looks good here. Some nice uncommon veteran's medals aswell.

The ribbon bar may have significance to the owner it may not. It could have been attached on there at any stage. Either way it is original too.

    Kind regards
    Pierce

      Hello Scott,

Looks like a really nice WW1 veteran's vanity bar of the Weimar Period. This guy apparently received no recognition (via actual merit or valor decorations) for his efforts in WW1, so he had a medal bar made up with all the veteran medals he could get. After 1934, all this guy would have rated would be the 1914-1918 Cross of Honor (Hindenburg Cross). These four veteran medals were all banned from wear during the Third Reich Period. That two-place ribbon bar should not be pinned to the medal bar like that, although people have been known to do things like this, even the veterans themselves. I would carefully remove the ribbon bar before it does any additional damage to the ribbon of that Prussian Veteran's Cross. The pin holes can eventually lead to tears in the ribbon and a steel pin and backplate of the ribbon bar can end up leaving ugly rust stains on an otherwise great condition medal bar.
As Pierce mentioned, this ribbon bar may or may not have significance to this particular veteran, but we will never really know for certain. The veteran may have eventually received permission to wear the Iron Cross, so this could actually be his ribbon bar of the Third Reich Period.
If you do remove the ribbon bar, you might want to put a drop of water on the holes and then quickly hit the area with a steam iron. After using a steam iron, though, you will want to use a blow dryer to make sure the bar is completely dry. (A steam iron can put condensation on the medals or any other metal parts.)

      Best regards,
      Tom

Thank you so much for the comments Pierce, Tom and Vince... I am happy to hear this one looks good and original. As usual, Thank you for taking the time to comment !

It is true that we will never know why the ribbon bar was there. The guy I bought this from said he got this in 1987 or so and it was there then. It could have been the guys, he could have pinned his brothers ribbon bar on that later in life for safe keeping.. who knows...

Tom, I will do so in removing the ribbon bar. I would leave it there but as you astutely pointed out it might cause tears or rust marks. I plan on hanging this horizonatally so no doubt it should go. I am grateful you informed me of the water trick. I assume that is to smooth out the holes...

Incidentally I can't find anything on that GREN REG 3. It is one of the few times that google doesnt even pull anything up.

          Thank you, Scott

            Hello Scott,

You can find it listed here:

            http://www.thefullwiki.org/1st_Divis...rman_Empire%29

Scroll down to August 1914 organization and you will see the 3. Grenadier Regiment listed as part of the 2. Infanterie-Brigade.

In late WW1 organization it was part of the 1. Infanterie-Brigade.

            Best regards,
            Tom

              Tom,

how you do it I will never know! Seriously... wow!

This is a big deal to me. I am printing stuff like this out to keep with all my medals. As you know I am conducting what I call my big "indexing" project.

              Thank you, Scott

                Hello Scott,

Did you notice up at the top of the page it mentions the Battle of Verdun?

                Best regards,

Grenadier Regiment König Friedrich Wilhelm I. (2. Ostpreussisches) Nr. 3

                  Hi Scott

From start of the war the regiment was part of 2. Inf. Brig. (1. Inf. Div.) until 29.7.1916, thereafter it was part of 1. Inf. Brig. (1. Inf. Div.) until end of war.

                  Regards

                    Hello Joern and Tom,

Yes I did see the history about Verdun. This Division was really involved in the first world war. I don't know when this individual went into service but it would seem he would have done something to get some recognition? IE EK2 or such. Odd...

This is great.. I never was a fan of this "exclusive" WWI Parade Medal Bar but after learning all this stuff from you guys it might be one of my favorites!

                    Thank you, Scott

For my own records... what do you estimate this bar is worth? Like $250 or so?

                      Thank you, Scott

I would say $250, at least, maybe more like $300-325. Even though that Verdun Cross has a bit of enamel damage, you don't see them very often.

                        Best regards,
                        Tom

                            That's a shame.

Could have been a lot worse, though. Still, a great looking bar.
