Among known Eiserne Division medals there is a type which is different from the others. The one which is currently on sale belongs to this type; another one can be found in famous collection; and finally you, Stefan, owns the 3rd one. I've seen few more, but the quality of pictures is preventing me from using them as examples, so let's research these ones.
-Firstly, all 3 examples seems to be made of white metal (Alpacca?) while usual medals are of yellow non-ferrous metal with silvering. However it's questionable and need to be confirmed. Hope Stefan can help us with that, but at least that's how they look like. Note the oxidation on reverse of ebay medal, it does not look like silver oxidation, does it?
-And finally--all of them are sharing the same distinctive features (pitting) on reverse (see pictures, I marked in red some of them). There is also some die flaw which can be found at 9 o'clock.
I have no idea what does it mean and make no conclusions thus far, I'm just describing what I see. I think we need to check this closer. Hope other members here who own this medal will post their examples to compare, especially those on medal bars.
P.S. My deepest apologies for using images of items which do not belong to me. I can erase them if owners will ask me about it; however without them my post will be useless.Attached Files

These medals are simply not worth what people seem ready to pay. It's the sudden obsession with the Baltic campaign, and I guess skulls as well in recent years that's obviously driving this.
There are much rarer and more valuable Freikorps badges and medals that don't command the attention these and the SSVK medal do.

Yeah, I feel it is a novelty item... the backstory is interesting though.
Hate to say it, but novice collectors and impulsive spenders are the usual suspects.
As it goes with anything, if the price keeps driving upwards it will collapse.
Same song and dance occurs in different collecting circles too, it just happens the Eiserne Div. medal is rare enough to warrant a frenzy.
Apologies for the derail!Last edited by mchap; 11-08-2013, 11:18 AM.
