    Malteserkreuz

    Hi gents,
Not nearly over here enough! But I'd like to show off my Maltese Cross.
It's a bit of a research project for me, as I must admit, I know next to nothing about them!
This is the 3rd class version yes? Any info on how, when, where and why they were awarded etc., would be greatly welcomed. I love the simplicity and elegance of these badges, any more out there? any 1st or 2nd class versions?
    regards
    jon

              Jon,

Actually what you have here is the 1st class badge of the Detachment von Randow, a freikorps piece. I have always rather liked the simplicity of these pieces. I think it's awesome.

Verkuilen Ager (an Association Member and frequent contributer to this forum) can give you more info about the Detachment von Randow.

                hmmm, interesting Tim.
Just as I was getting confused!
Thanks for the info, I'll post it in the Freikorps forum, and see what they can tell me over there...
                regards

                    Jon,

I PM'd Verkuilen to see if he can provide more info. If he doesn't check in I'll just post what it says in his book.

You know, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a Freikorps forum.

BTW, the Prussian Johanniter kreuz is always either white enamel or just plain or patterned silver, rather than black enamel. I think in terms of dollar value the von Randow decoration is probably worth a little more than a Profess cross of the Johanniter Orden.

                        Thanks your help Tim

This was from the grouping of General Friedrich Wiese (from Kai)
as his '3rd class' cross, for services in the Deutsch/Russischen Westarmee.
I think there was an award document also, which confirmed this

I think there were badges of this design awarded. A 1st class neck order (with skull on the loop) and also with swords...
And yes the 1st class cross of the 'detachment von randow' seems to be the same design badge.
Hmm, I'm hoping for an expert to interrupt my ramblings and put me straight here!

no one out there with any to share?
                        regards
