Freikorps: Rare 2nd class Annaberg Cross with miniature stick pin

    Hello All,

Here are some pics of my 2nd class Annaberg Cross and miniature stick pin eqivalent. This award was issued to members of the Freikorps Oberland who participated in the storming of the Annaberg on May 21, 1921. My cross is maker marked "L. Lerch/München" and has a vertical pin as indicated in Verkuilen Ager's reference on Freikorps awards. Needless to say, originals of these crosses are quite rare. Sorry for the artifacts in the pics on the cross arms . . those are not present on the cross itself, but resulted from the scanning process (my ancient 2 megapixel digital camera cannot do as well on detail and closeup as the scanner!)

All comments and assessments of originality welcome! Thanks in advance!

Same here. Can you give us the info on the book as I haven't seen that either.

Don, you'll find it in Detlev's book (p.91) referred to as a 1st class. No mentioning of the miniature though.

              cheers

                Hi Guys,

Verkuilen put together his reference in 1973 after many years of collecting and research. It is privately published. He also has one on Freikorps insignia, and I consider his work to be the definitive word on the subject. These references are very hard to find and when they do surface fetch a good price. Verkuilen indicates that the 1st class version of this award was worn suspended from the neck, cravat style. The maker-marked version like mine is definitely 2nd class. The award was established in 1930.

Absolutely stunning piece Bill. Do you have or have you seen the memorial medal as well? Steve

                    Hi Steve,

Thanks for the kind remarks. I've only seen the memorial medal in the reference materials and do not have one.

                    Best,
                    Bill
