This insignia was associated with the Freiwilligen Landesjägerkorps. A varying subset of attached units apparently used it as well. Almost identical insignia were also used by Freiwilligen-Detachement Probstmayr, Freiwilligen-Detachement Bogendörfer, Freiwilligen 17. Infanterie-Division (General von Held), and Freikorps von Hülsen. Three types were verified by von Salomon (the differences between them are subtle and require closer examination that this photo allows), and it is likely there were others.
Contemporary photos show that the presence of a few real youngsters in some of these units was not uncommon. There were even a couple of academic volunteer units. While they were made up of college students, many may not have looked much older than this fellow.
