I had never seen these before and now I have two... the NAW was the Nationales Aufbauwerk der DDR. These are evidently issued to support the initiative of the 7-year plan, but does anyone know why these miniature badges were issued in different levels and does anyone know if there were larger versions of these? What I have here are a silver and a bronze level and I think it is fairly certain to assume that there will also have been a gold level. Cheers, Torsten (ebay id german.militaria).

Hi Torsten.
Given these were issued in "Levels", the reason for their existence and presumably "Why" they were issued would be to reward or bestow some type of recognition upon a "Worker" that exceeded a proposed production schedule. Would you agree?Michael D. GALLAGHER

Michael, yes I agree...problem is that I have never come across these particular awards before and this opens up all sorts of questions: when were they issued? Was there a larger medal format? How many were awarded? Were there any criteria? Where they related to the 7-Jahrplan Aktivist programme? Why did these specifically bear the NAW letters...without them I would have assumed these to be simply 7-year plan activist miniatures (sample pic below for the standard 7-Year plan Aktivist medal...but then the silver and bronze would not fit into that..??? just questions, questions, questions... well, lets see if we can answer any of them?? Cheers, Torsten.
