Any way to guess what waffenfarbe he is wearing from his medals/badges?:

I would guess he's a black Engineer.

Yes , I'd say Black piping too, cant really tell branch from medals. The piping looks to crisp and dark to be rear service dark green, which does look very dark in some period BW pictures. The contrast on the picture looks good, so 95% sure it is Engineer Black.
