Thanks Nico for your this post. For sure we should never forget what people did to find freedom during the Cold War.
Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don't dare express themselves as we did. Quote - Sophie Scholl - White Rose resistance group

      Ralph,
      you're totally right.
After the Wall was build, my Mom volunteered on one of the tunnels at Bernauer Strasse to get their Professor out of the East.
He worked in the West and lived in the East, so one day he wasn't coming to work.
He and his Family made it to the West.
maybe a Year ago I told the story to one of my neighbours at Storage and he confirmed, he worked on the same Tunnel.
It was a young Guy with dark hair and when he came out of the tunnel he was white like a sheet of Paper.
In the last minute Police found the tunnel and shot inside with their MP but as the Tunnel made a turn in the middle, they just hit the Sand.
From the Balloon-Escape to Berlin in the late 90's I saw the Balloon hanging in the Trees at Potsdamer Chaussee next to the US Duppel Housing Area.
As it was really cold up there, the Guy froze and dropped in the neighbours Garden next to a Friend of my Sisters House.
So living in Berlin was allway's better than any Spy or Criminal Movie, we had it live.
I also know at least 3 People who were marked as Human Traffickers in the Stasi Files. The ones who stayed in Berlin couldn't use the Transit to Western Germany, they had to fly every time, not to get caught by the Stasi.

BTW: The best way to smuggle Stuff out of the DDR was to use the Transit Routes for exchanging from one to another Car.
For sure not the Recreation Areas, there was allway's a Stasi (other Story later), the best was, the Ossi was waiting with open motor Hatch at the side of the Highway, the other Car stoping next to it, Stuff thrown through the Windows and the off you go.
For sure you had to look out for other Cars, so not to do it in bright sunshine, sunset was the best time.
About the Resting Areas: For years we stopped at one place, heading North from Berlin, allwa'y a very quiet Area next to a large Cornfield and behind a Forest. Next to the Forest was an old Construction Workers Trailer, looking like it will brake into parts when you touch it.
One day, it was snowing and f....g cold, the Chimney in this Wreck was smoking, so we all stood in one line, waving in it's direction and yelling "Hello, Mr. Stasi!"
It was a sunday, so for sure no serious Lumberjack or so would be at work.

Better to stay in in this crazy world.

Just read the news, today they had a shooting next t a Synagogue in Halle with at least 2 dead.
One girl coming from the Bus Stop and one customer in a Kebap Shop.
One Cabbie injured after the Shooters hijacked his Cab, now they expect then in the Leipzig Area but they also say 1 was arrested.
One guy took pics, they're runing around in Flak Vests, Balaclavas and Helmets, so maybe more right wing than muslim Terror.
                To remind, today is Jom-Kippur.

                  Absolutely awful, indeed.

Fortunately (and I hesitate to use that word in such a context), the perpetrator was so incompetent that he failed to get into the synagogue, suffered weapon jams, had an explosive device bounce off the frame of a door he wanted to lob it through etc.

Two dead are two dead too many, but his goal was a bloodbath with God knows how many casualties.

They said, the weapons were selfmade, on the Pictures you could see his Grenades and Explosives: Clearly small Veggie Cans wrapped in Aluminium Foil.
On one Pic you could see a, what they said, Deac, PPSh, what will follow a Witchhunt on all serious Collectors in Germany who would never use such Item for something Stupid.
Read about a Bajonet Ban, because some Idiod killed somebody with a Deco- Samurai Sword what can be bought in every Souvenir Shop.
Just waiting for a Kitchen Knife Ban because somebody used this for Knife Crime. Some Retailers in the UK stopped selling single Knifes in their Shops after the London Bridge Terrorists used Lidl Ceramic Knifes for thier Murders.

Thanks for the update, just please remember not to venture to far away from the DDR collecting interest.
