where did the DDR produce the awards ??

    Hello friends

    2 Questions

    1. Does anybody know where the DDR did produce all the awards, medals and Badges?? I could not find anything on the Net.Maybe someone has a book about it.
I would really like to visit such Factories if they're still exist.

    2. probably the most of you know the ebay seller truckdieler-de who is selling DDR reproductions of most High end awards.
I'm just wondering where this Seller gets those Things from? Because I would like to add some high end awards to my collection (can't afford the real ones) but don't really want to buy it off him, cause I'd bet he gets these repros somewhere for much less. any idea??

All of the DDRs awards after the 1960s were produced by the firm of PräWeMa (PRÄgeWErkzeugMAchinen) in Marktneukirchen (earlier TR award maker Brehmer).

Just after the fall of the Wall many dealers bought up all the stocks from this company. I think the last rests were sold of in 2000.
They also produced restrikes of earlier DDR awards but always left telltale signs on them so that everybody knew they were restrikes. The firm was totally closed after 2000.

I think all these modern repros are coming from somewere else but don´t know were.

This is a very interesting topic. One may even ask, how many DDR awards, medals, and badges were made in the USSR until insignia manufacturers could tool up to make the awards, and how many former Third Reich badge makers were located within the territory of the DDR, and of that number, how many proceeded to make awards for the new government.

Osang produced DDR awards for a limited period of time, i have seen 1st May DDR tinnies with the HA logo on the reverse but only early ones up till about 1960.

I´ve never seen DDR awards that were made in the Soviet Union but that does´nt mean there are´nt any.

After that most awards were made by VEB PräWeMa ( earlier Brehmer). Some were also made by the Mint in Berlin

            Hi all:

I have a few questions about PräWeMa. I am researching communist Albanian orders and PräWeMa made several of the higher quality earlier decorations.

            1. When did PräWeMa get into the business of making decorations?

            2. I have noticed two different types of PräWeMa screwplates (a larger one and a small one) - does anyone know approximately when these styles were made?

            3. Does anyone know if they had any unused stocks of Albanian orders on hand or if they made restrikes?

            Thanks!

PräWeMa started making awards right after the end of WW2 and during the forming of the DDR. Like I said, it used to be the Brehmer factory and was apparantly not destroyed or damaged during the war.

The early small screwplate which is marked "PräWeMa" was used in the 1960s, some time in the early 70s they went over to the standard, unmarked screwplates. Same thread on them though

Never saw any Albanien stuff when I was there nor did anybody mention it. I also doubt that they would have done Albanien restrikes.

                Hi Skip:

Thank you for the additional information. That helps me put the PräWeMa manufacturing timeframes in better perspective.

                Cheers,
                Eric

Skip, I hope you get to see my question? Do you have any info on what these 'telltale signs' were that were left on the re-strikes? Cheers, Torsten.

                    Präwema

In my records I have three Betriebsteilen for Pr******228;wema.

                    BT Leipzig
                    BT Markneukirchen
                    BT Sehma

I know that Betreibsteil Leipzig operated as late as 1988 because it is listed in the Leipzig Branchenbuch under various entries, among them abzeichen.

                      Really interesting topic.
As I recall one early DDR collector/dealer back in 1994/5 had visited the factory. Many of the stockpiles were sold at insanely low prices here in the USA.
I was once (1996) offered 11 DDR daggers in the cases -new) on the old AOL forum for $100.
Did the DDR ever produce otheer countrys' awards ? I have seen Vietnamese awards that purportedly were made in czechoslovakia and other African liberation groups and Ethiopian awards that I would swear by the pn catch construction came from the DDR.
                      Do the archives still exist?

They're still working. See http://www.kellerlogo.de/. The last DDR, Korean, African Stuff they've made was on Auction in early 2005. They also sold all the Special Tools for DDR Awards, so there's somebody out there still making them.

                              Veb Praewema

                              Alas I knew PRAEWEMA well.

Used to be the old Brehmer firm. In 1988 a huge haul of original III Reich badges and medals were found behind a false wall when a water main broke. The Stasi swooped in and rounded it all up.

How many people know the Stasi was in the militaria business? These items were sold in the west and the funds were used to finance intelligence operations against NATO countries - as well as to buy items needed for DDR industry.

I bought tons of original DDR era production badges from PRAEWEMA from 1990 through 1995. Mostly the lower end items. Sold them cheap too.

Around 1994-95 Prawema received a huge order for their remaining DDR dagger fittings and accoutrements - enough to complete about 500 DDR General Oficers daggers.

I still have a lot of DDR classification badges left. One can't give them away any longer.

Now they make badges for the Bundeswehr and Fire-Police.
