    MfS records

This is in today's Spiegel online magazine. Well I know how to translate it in my language (French) but I'll try in English. It says that these are "scent samples" taken from arrested people in the GDR. These were probably given to dogs in order to find that people again if something happened.

There must be so many special things in the MfS records (archives) that haven't been revealed yet.

Januar 1990 ans Licht.

Hey Soviet...thanks for posting about the article. you are correct, they are scent jars that the MfS used to store individual human scents. The STASI realized that when scents were stored in a sealed jar for a long time the scent would get stronger as time went by. So if there were problems of a person who disappeared from them STASI. They would open the scent jar of the particular person and give it to the hounds...Thanks again...
Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don't dare express themselves as we did. Quote - Sophie Scholl - White Rose resistance group

In the book, "Stasi" author John Kohler makes mention of the Stasi collecting scent from suspects and placing the jars in storage until needed.

This is really eye popping stuff. I wonder what determined who's scent went into a jar. More to the point, I wonder if by chance they surreptitiously collected scent from certain specific West Berliner or West German VIP dignitaries, on the chance that if and when the time dictated, they could more easily track them down and/or locate them. Like for example if they were to have invaded West Berlin? I can envision Teams of Polizei Dog Handlers, under the Command of MfS, searching with their dogs and Scent Jars in hand through the rubble, for certain VIP types on the run or hiding out.

Gives a whole new meaning to the word "Mason Jar". Sir, this jar contains the scent of Herr MASON.
