German Marxists In US Civil War

Sometimes during research of another interest in history I occassionally find something that indirectly ties into another aspect of another era that I study. Other than my interest in the DDR, I'm an avid student of the US Civil War, and recently, a friend who works at the Chickamauga/Chattanooga National Military Park was telling me about a Union General who served in the German army and apparently having to immigrate to the US after the 1848 German Revolution. This General, August Willich was a follower of Karl Marx, as was (so I've been told) members of his regiment he commanded, the 9th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Also, I've read that another US General of German descent, Franz Sigel likewise fled Germany and was apparantly another believer of Marx.

Very strange. It would be interesting to find out how the DDR commemorated the events of 1848.

      Roy and Bootmanager,

Truly some amazing stuff you have come across. I don't recall this from History Class. A "Socialist" Regiment in the Union Army. Who'd a thunk it?

Nicely done Gentlemen. Now as Ralph is always so keen to say, I'm gonna have to hit the internet and research this further. This is very enlightening.

Hey Roy and Hans...This is an OUTSTANDING thread!!!

For sure this was not in my history books growing up. What would be interesting to know is if the folks in Ohio grew up knowing this small peice of history since the Civil War was such an important part of our history in the States that were affected by the civil War. Or was it buried because of the cold War mentality that we were living in back then.

        But bottom line...very informative.

Hey Mike your right I would for sure do some further research on this. But right now I am in the early stages of possibly ramping up on another history project.

Hey Hans...I translated the section that discusses the 5% percent...

1849 - 1855, after the defeat of the freedom movement and national movement and the end of the badischen revolution many must politically leave the country. In this time emigration at around 5% of the population in the zone Badens and Württemberg to USA.

And your Urkunde came from your bunker... Interesting certificate about the revolution!!! Do you know if a medal came with it?
