        Nico,

degradation in the NVA could happen very easely..... usually as a consequence of heavy disciplinary violations.

I personally have a collegue on my job who was an artillery Captain......he had been degradated to Soldat and shortly after that quit the military ..... he made some "mess" during a maneuver....

        Interesting documentation you have there!!
Interesting on the second one is the promotion to Gefreiter in 1968 and the degradation happened in 1981. ... 13 years later!!!??? .....how comes that? Can't imagine him being a Gefreiter for 13 years. If this Wehrdienstausweis belonged to a Berufssoldat....why are the other promotions to the next ranks not notified in it?........though I have to say that in the NVA as for most of the armed forces in the world .....if you have a bad attitude they won't promote you...

        still it's funny....being a Gefreiter for 13 damn years!!....gosh!

Not fair... can you give the broad story? Where there people killed?

The OS did not do too badly to go down to Gefreiter after only about six months service. His story could be a straight forward case of him deciding that being an officer and serving for 25 years was not for him and so he got transferred out to do just the normal 18 months conscription service. During my time this was only possible up until the end of basic training without any more serious consequences, but that may have been different in the early 70s. There was one guy in my unit that decided that life as a professional officer was not for him and he left at the end of basic training. Not sure what happened to him after, but there would have been no repercussions for him because of this at the time. There was another guy in another year within my unit that decided to leave after about two years of officer training and to get out was much harder for him. Cheers, Torsten.

Interesting thread to see the booklets show demotions/busted in rank, just like former members of the MfS.
Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don't dare express themselves as we did. Quote - Sophie Scholl - White Rose resistance group

One possibility is that he finished his conscription time in 1968 as Gefreiter. He would e a reservist. Because he would not see any active duty as reservist he keeps that rank. In 1981 he gets called up to do 3 months as a reservist (often the case in 1st line units) or just a 2-3 week exercise. Whatever he did then could have triggered the demotion to Soldat. My first guess would be an incident related to alcohol but it could also be something like causing a serious accident.
