Weighing in on SSS Wilhelm Pieck cuff title in GST

I recognize that this was discussed elsewhere - I believe Gord0n Craig started the thread back in January of 2014 (how does one post a link to an earlier thread?) - but I recently acquired a 1971 copy of the East German magazine "FF Dabei" which shows exactly that - a sea officer of the GST wearing a Wilhelm Pieck cuff title.

Notice that it seems to differ from those being currently offered on ebay by having "Wilhelm Pieck" fully spelled out and contained within quotation marks.

I'll post better pictures/scans when I actually have the magazine in hand - I also picked up a 1989 copy of NBI from the same seller at least for the cover (hoping there might be at least one more good picture inside)

    ccw,

Nice pictures on these magazine covers. The officers is particularly nice. Would love to own a tunic and hat like that. I am a long way from home right now so can not have a look at my collection and try to answer your cuff band question. Hopefully, some other forum member can.

    Regards,

    Gordon

There is also a nice collection of images of early FDJ members on board here (there are more sets of images to be found by "scrolling" through the numbered bars at the bottom of the page):

          ccw,

I didn't answer your question "how does one post a link to an earlier thread". First, you left click on your browser bar. This will highlight the text in the bar in blue. Next, right click on the highlighted section of the browser bar and save it. Once in your post you simply "paste" the browser bar into the post.
I've done that below for a 1952 video from youtube on the Wilhelm Peick. There are three other videos on youtube on the Wilhelm Peick. Note in the video below that the Commanding Officer of the Wilhelm Peick is wearing four rings for his rank. This is an early photo showing the ship when it still was part of the FDJ. Great uniform shots in this video. Note the cap tallies on the crew.

Aha - so just as you would when linking any other web page -
            Here's the earlier discussion:

              ccw,

Thanks for posting the link to my old thread. Since I started that old thread I was able to prove to myself that these cuff bands were worn by the GST and your picture of the magazine adds additional proof of this.
More research is needed in this area though. I have been told that the cuff band shown in your magazine cover was the second type issued to the GST Marine. I do not have any dates though.
Since your original post I have been able to purchase a uniform similar to the one on the cover. Tunic and pants. Thanks to some friends in Germany. Now the hunt for a visor cap begins.

              Regards,

              Gordon

                Gordon,
I think you mixed up with the titles.
As I know, Wilhelm is the old and W. the new Style.

Further images of Segelschulschiff Wilhelm Pieck insignia

Finally found some time to scan these in - I'm going to start with my own scans of the two images I posted before. First, the Segelschulschiff "Wilhelm Pieck" cuff title from 1971:

                      1974 cuff title

Here's an image I found of the cuff title as worn in 1974

                        Note cuff rank

Forgot to point out: in both cases it seems that here the rank insignia braid rings do not go all the way around the cuffs.

                          1962 cuff title

Here is an image of the cuff title as worn in 1962 - here we have the earlier "script" form of the title as it also appeared on the first cap tallies (which I will post). Also, in this case the rank insignia goes fully around the cuff (Pieck captains seem to love their sextants, no?):

                            Commissioning photo

Unfortunately this is the best photo I could find of what I can only assume is the first form of the cuff title, since it is worn at the commissioning of the ship (by none other than Herr Pieck himself) - unfortunately, while we can see the FDJ armshield, the cuff title is illegible.

                              Later images

Here is an image of the first captain of the Pieck in 1968 - once again, he is wearing the script version of the cuff title - interestingly enough, it is worn above the rank insignia in this case:
