    KD helmet

What do we think of this helmet? I had never seen one before, other than in period photographs. Once the removable white covers were introduced, these painted and decalled helmets must have been sand-blasted and repainted, removing any sign of what they once were

    shell dated 1960 apparently

There are many documented instances of its usage:

the badge looks to new for me... looks like an Aufkleber and not like an Abziehbild
(Aufkleber is not so thin like an Abziehbild)
i think it is put together

I concur, the same vendor has an extremely dodgy looking helmet with a VoPo sunburst on it!

I'm also skeptical. Note the scuffs and scratches all over the shell yet the "KD" decal is perfectly untouched.

I also saw the helmet with the Police "starburst" decal in front - I've never seen any photographic evidence of that being done.

Yes the parallel offer of a 1972 dated helmet with a Vopo star decal on the front did not fill me with confidence...
Having said this, and talking of this KD helmet on its own, I would concur that the Decal looks too pristine. The white band looks genuine though... at least to me. As my last photograph of the Armeerundschau cover shows, these helmets were painted white but the diamond decal was not always there. So I would be inclined to think that it is a genuine KD helmet that has later (post DDR) been embellished with a decal or a sticker... Possibly a reproduction one.

              Iannima,

I agree, the white band itself looks good. The damage appears to be consistent with the rest of the shell. As you said (and photographic evidence shows) helmets with the white band did not necessarily also have the "KD" emblem.

I didn't see the date on the "Vopo" helmet. I saw the decal in front, thought "Yeah, right" and moved on.

Whether or not the decal is perfectly original, if attained for a decent price it would make for a lovely display piece, considering how hard it is to come across KD helmets.

My goodness, seems the bidders didn't stumble across this thread! Or else they knew something we didn't...

                      Hello everyone,
I´ve been registered for quite some time now without having been very active here. My main collecting field is East German helmets and I followed the auction as well as this thread with interest.
As stated above, the decal itself is perfectly original. The white band and the scratches on it look convincing. The decal has not been applied above scratches, as far as the pics show. Decal shows authentic signs of age (bleached, bubbled surface of the top layer of glue). So it seems the fact that the decal itself got no damage when the band shows some, would be the only issue one could have with this one. But missing any other red flags (on the pics provided), it will boil down to anyones personal comfort level to take this as a lucky circumstance or a reason to be skeptical.
Personally I think this helmet may well be confirmed being a consistant, nice and rare original piece by an in hands inspection.
Then the price would have been quite reasonable in my book.

                      Many regards
                      Stefan

How come it is advertised AGAIN ?

                        http://www.ebay.de/itm/fruher-NVA-St...item46429a8bc3

looks like the exact same helmet scratches and all...
this raises questions... much more than the pristine decal...

In my estimation, either the winner was not happy with the purchase and returned it, or the seller is churning these out by the dozen and is using stock photos. Either way, it raises quite a few questions...

Probably got his mate to bid and push the price up but he ended up winning it.
