post 26 is Landsberg Prison in West Germany, which is where he was jailed and post 27 is a letter that he wrote in jail but that was rejected by the US Army censor and on the right hand side is a sheet with the reasons given by the sensor for why the letter was rejected. Cheers, Torsten.

PS: The document shown in post 26 might be of a little more interest, as this is the receipt/pass that he was given by a Red Army general to confirm that he had indeed surrendered The City of Greifswald to the red Army without putting up a fight and that, providing that he sticks to the conditions of the surrounder, then the Red Army is not to touch him or the town, etc.

Hey Torsten - Thanks much and for sure educational especially the surrender pass from the Red Army...

Ralph - you may already be familiar with this book by Froh and Wenzke.

It contains small biographic capsules of the NVA's top brass to include Wehrmacht service.

        Take care - TJ

Thanks for posting the book. I have seen the book, but my cover is different than yours. My copy came out in 2000. When did the version you own come out?

One-(short)legged man? Or careless Photoshop surgery?

It can't be an artifact of the viewing angle, since both of his neighbor's feet are clearly visible. It looks to me as though they chopped off his left foot below the ankle, and rather crudely 'welded' half of it in front of the boot shaft, where the right foot would otherwise have been visible. They didn't even bother putting a heel piece back on. This is so far below par for a Photoshop job that perhaps it was done the old fashioned way, back in the DDR, way before Photoshop was invented? Or else this really was a one-legged man wearing a custom-made boot.

That definitely looks doctored... the "tell" for me is the line where the boot meets the pavement. Apart from the conspicuous lack of a heel, there is a dark line that seems very unnatural, like someone painted on a "shadow" with the brush-on toner used before PhotoShop (Takes me back...I can almost smell the stuff just thinking about it...).

I think it is doctored, poorly, but perfectly innocently. My guess is that there was something, probably somebody's shoulder, blocking out the bottom right corner of the frame, and this was a (none too talented) attempt at improving the composition.

                  Genossen,
The use of the Powers of Truth and Justice in photo's for Progressive reasons , when done so badly is a good thing .. The Historical Document "On Wheels and Tracks" has many such examples.....

Interesting discussion and if true, then the publisher needs to state that in a write up within the book that some photos have been doctored to better assist the photo and the audience.

At this point if true, somebody is treating the book audience as idiots if they thought that it would not be noticed...The Cold War is over.

                          Hi Ralph,

I have an old booklet from 1959/1960, West Germany, a very fine example for the cold war propaganda.
                          Din A4 across, 32 pages.

                          It is written about the

                          Arbeitsgemeinschaft ehemaliger Offizier (AeO)

                          "Woking/study group of former officers"

Several profiles of the former Wehrmacht soldiers are printed there.

                          Regards
                          Uwe

                            Hi,

I think it is interesting, to know the West-German view of the former Wehrmacht generals/officers in the DDR.

Here the short biography of Petershagen from this booklet:

Uwe - Thanks for the data from your post of rudolf petershagen. I did more searching and he passed away April 1969.
