    Putting together a Volksmarine uniform!

    Hello everyone!

After school ended today, I went to the surplus store and found a Volksmarine EM overseas cap in size 62 (for $5)! I'm a size 60 but nevertheless, it fits quite well.

Anyways, now I want to complete a Volksmarine uniform! I know Gowen sells the middys and matching pants at a reasonable price.

Problem is, the website I use as a reference for Volksmarine uniforms is down...so I'm going to need your help! I don't know much about Volksmarine uniforms.

Can someone tell me which orders of dress for Volksmarine enlisted personnel would use the overseas cap? I know Borduniform and Felddienstuniform make use of it, but were there any others? Does dienstuniform use the overseas cap?

Furthermore, I'd like to know the exact components I'm going to need for whichever order of dress I choose.

The best reference for Volksmarine uniforms in English is Issue #17, Fall 1997 of "Die Nationale Volksarmee" the journal of the now sadly defunct Society of East German Militaria Collectors.

This issue was dedicated to the Volksmarine and contains uniform charts that list all of the component uniform items for the Volksmarine Uniform Types. It's just too much for me to scan at the moment, otherwise I'd send it to you.

Oh that is a shame. I would really enjoy something like that now.

I have a complete wooly blue Uniform left, worn and 100% original. Got it many Years from a Guy who served in Rostock.

Can the wooly blue uniform be worn with an overseas cap?

Bowl; as a precaution (I can now safely say ) I saved all the pictures that were on that site. I at least guess you're speaking of marineuniformen(dot)de?

To answer your question using the pictures:

Overseas cap was used with Borduniform and Felddienstuniform as you said. Also the Gefechtsuniform (the orange one) according to the pictures, though a steel helmet might fit that setup better... Those are all that I can find based on this material for now. There is no mention of using the side cap with the wooly uniform.

I saw Pic's of them. Maybe if not worn as a Parade Uniform Ashore or so.

Talking about volsmarine side cap, I just got by mail today a volksmarine side cap to go with my orange suit It's darker than on the pic (flash effect). It's cheap (3 euros on ebay germany). It has a nice gold piping on top. 1977 model with the open sides (like one of the guy on the "auf Wacht" picture).

Open Flap Officer for 3 euros is a steal.

Very nice item - at €3 it's even better than just nice!

I was also thinking that it was a bargain . And I got another one side cap for 3 euros too but it is for another thread.

Question about the volksmarine uniform : what to wear under the orange suit?

I was watching a video about the Volksmarine...and I saw a Meister on the bridge of a ship. He was wearing the overseas cap with dienstuniform! I really like dienstuniform, so that was a pleasant discovery.

Only problem is, it's a bit pricey. The tie and pants are around $20 each on Gowen, and the tunic is $50 at a surplus store downtown...

I've decided I'm going to put together a white Borduniform, and maybe Felddienstuniform as well.

But I've noticed that the white Borduniform was worn with a blue and white collar. Gowen doesn't have any of those in stock. Was this order of dress ever worn without said collar?

Another question: I've read that officers had a version of Borduniform that consisted of a Hemdbluse, pants, and overseas cap. Did senior petty officers get to wear this combination as well? If so, I'll go with that setup instead.

And yes Jan...I'm talking about marineuniformen.de

Oh, and here are some pictures of my hat.

And a picture of me wearing it.

How well does it fit me? Keep in mind it's a 62 and I'm a 60. I also put a safety pin inside the top to keep its shape. I have a Bundesluftwaffe cap that has had this done to it.
