    Earlier issue police idenification...

Hey all...I have posted two images I hope of somewhat significant and of interest to the forum members in the MDI DDR field. I find this pre MDI identification card of interest that was issued in 1947 prior to the formation of the DDR state of October 1949 and that it has both German and Soviet writing and ink stamp marks to assist and validate the German police officer in his duties.

      Re: early Polizei ID document

Hi Ralph, Is the signature that of Erich Mielke? I noticed that the signature in this early DDR police ID document resembles of Mielke's signature. Thanks for posting the interesting early Soviet Zone Police ID document! I never saw the such earliest post-war police ID document before. James

        Man oh man, Ralph.

1947 - this was the era of the DVdI and the K 5.

This document is quite something given that it is dated 1947. The combination of German and Russian writing and presence of seals, again both German and Russian, is testament to a period when the Russians were in the process of building up a police state so to speak, in what was then called the Soviet Occupation Zone, or SBZ for short. This of course was accomplished under the auspices of the NKVD/NKGB and MVD/MGB, and Col. General Ivan A. SEROV and Nikolai K. KOVAL’CHUK.

In 1948, Walter ULBRICHT, Wilhelm PIECK and Otto GROTEWOHL, having secured a resolution from no less than STALIN himself, were able to, over the objections of Soviet Minister of State Security Victor S. ABAKUMOV, iniate the beginnings of an autonomous German state police. With the establishment of the GDR in 1949, the complete separation of K 5 from the aformentioned Soviet Criminal Investigation Departments was accomplished and realized, paving the way for its eventual transformation Feb 8th, 1950 into the notorious and dreaded MfS. And the rest as we like to say, is History.

        Super.

          Good day all...

James...you had me looking twice at the signature you were asking about...but unfortunately the signature is not of Mielke's. In the next thread or two...I will be posting an earlier issue DDR driver licence. And thanks for your interest...

Mike...very good write up (Two thumbs up)...Do I get any credits for your history course...Ralph
