If I recall correctly the upper part of the VM Schützenschnur was attached to a gold naval button that was sewn onto the right shoulder. The other end was fastened under the little black tie (Middy Knot) by either a safety pin or a plain button.
Also note that the Middy Knot was only worn with particular uniforms which include the service uniform, walking out uniform and parade uniform. It would normally not have been worn with the On-Board or work uniforms.Last edited by ehrentitle; 09-09-2012, 03:04 PM.

Here is a scan of the cover of Der Volksmarine published in 2009 which should give you an idea of how the VM Schützenschnur is worn on the parade uniform. Sadly the cover has the only color photos in this book. However Volksmarine auf Wacht published in 1983 has color photos throughout and is a must have for any serious VM collector.
