Here's just a couple of variations of many for now.

It's one of those typical English summer days here, dark as dusk and incessant bloody precipitation.

so I'm afraid pictures are not possible now, I apologise for the quality of these.

    John,

Here is the back of two of mine like yours, these are the 32mm (the other is 21 mm I think)

    Solid and hollow.

David the one before yours looks like this, around 1964 circa....this is an earlier 'enameled' one as opposed to the later variants having a 'lakiert' finish, they almost look plastic ( well they basicaly are) as the coating is very thick, the enameled badges are generaly earlier. There are however painted versions that are earlier too. (note earlier badges had a thicker enamel)

Simple terminology for a simple man as I man, if I'm incorrect in any sense please correct me.....I tend to use my own descriptive diction. I'm learning on these EG things.

I could only take this other pic today, it's for good knowledge again and there are several versions you'll encounter but this ones for the the TP out of interest.

            Kind regards,

              RE: Serial numbers

              Marcus,

Until you posted those scans, I did not realize these awards were serial numbered on the reverse. The things you learn on this Forum.

Here is a photo depicting another variant of the same FDJ Award:

Woops, didn't realize there were more pics coming. since Marcus has posted an example already of the one I was using, I am cutting it out to save space. My apologies Marcus.

Hi i must agree with Panzer Fuehrer,it is nice to have someone who actually served with the East german army and i look forward to reading your posts.

On another point what would be the best books to buy for collecting medals of the former East German Army?and what websites would be worth while looking at?
I have just started collecting and was wondering what reference material to get.
                Many thanks

No do post it Michael, it could be a variant of one of mine, size or indeed the coloured partition.......which I provincialy relate/determine an approx age by.

Apologies never necessary to a friend

                  Kind regards,

                    David,

I'm in the same boat mate, these are the only reference I have at this moment in time. All German text though. The first are a must, and the first of the two a must for the little badges, tinnie type things.......the second is great for medal depiction. I wouldn't heed any attention though to the price guides in there at all.

                    Kind regards,

                    Marcus

You know Skip on the forum, he lives in Berlin and I go and see him; I bought these whilst over in Berlin a few weeks ago.

Skip maybe able to get these for you....if not no worries the next trip which should be soon (next month or two) I'll get you a couple of copies. There are a few others, again in German text that are very good too.

                          Kind regards,

                          Marcus

PS And ask away, send me an e mail, pm whatever you want......I am away though Mon to Fri.

RE: Books and Sources of NVA Medals

                            David,

Here are the two books I find most useful. They can be found from time to time on Ebay (American and German). If you have deep pockets and want them "Yesterday", they can also be ordered from Bob Gowen at Gowenmilitaria.

As for sources for Medals, I think Ebay (American and German) will be your best source.

                            When using American Ebay:
                            Click on "Collectibles.
                            Then click on "Militaria".
Then in the upper left hand corner type in something like "East Germany" or "DDR". You can further define your search by using the word "Medals".

                            When using German Ebay (Ebay.de):
                            Click on "Sammeln & Seltenes.
                            Then click on "DDR.
                            Then click on "Medaillen".

Hope to see you there, and happy hunting.
