    Hi,

there a two articles in the Orden-Militaria-Magazin (BDOS/DGO) No. 93 and 94 from the end of the year 2000.

93: Meister des Sports, 9 pages. Awarded appr. 4,000 medals

94: Verdienter Meister des Sports, 12 pages. Awarded appr. 2,800 medals.

Excellent informations about the regulations, the award documents and the medals and cases.

      Uwe,

Thanks for the information on the magazines and the number of these medals awarded. Looks as though it is worth trying to find these two issues of the magazine for reference purposes.

      Regards,

      Gordon

Interesting to see the numbers that were awarded the medals. Thanks...

          Gentlemen,

Another cased Verdienter Meister des Sports. This particular medal is identified by the seller as a Bartel #71b. It is stamped 900 on the back for the silver content. According to Bartel, medals awarded between 1955 and 1970 were make of 900 silver and gold washed. From what Bartel says in his book "DDR-SPEZIALKATALOG 1949-1990" it would appear that 71b, which was only issued in 1971-72, were still made of silver, and marked as such on the back, but perhaps not gold washed? I am unsure of this and perhaps Uwe could confirm this from the article in the magazine he referenced above. The medal appears to show considerable tarnish on the obverse, which would indicate a silver finish, but appears to be gold on the back. It is shown in a white case. Harry says his Meister des Sports is in a red case.

          Regards,

          Gordon

              Gordon,

I don't see a problem with the medal.

(900 is for gold plated silver.

There is the same problem with the gold film on the older NVA medals. Sometimes nearly all of the gold plating is gone.

When you compare it direct with a Meister des Sports, I think, that you can see the difference.

I don't have these medals in 900 silver.

              Uwe

Gordon - Thanks for adding the medal to this thread. I have not seen a 900 marked one before. Uwe, thanks for your added comments.

                  Uwe,

I suspected that would be the answer to the corrosion on the front of the medal. I was just seeking some additional thoughts. Also hoping for some confirmation that the 71b was also produced in 900 silver which would seem to be the case. Always nice to be able to post a picture of a medal with the precious metal content indicated. Thanks again for your help.

                  Regards,

                  Gordon
