I found this 62 page booklet from Osprey’s Elite Series (ISBN: 0-85045-730-0) to be usefully in providing an overview/summary of the East German Military as well as the other WARSAW PACT countries (minus the Soviet Union).

It a handy reference, however it was written in 1987 before the Wall came down so there is a good chance that there are some errors. Yours has a different cover than mine, so it may be a later reissue. In 2008 Osprey published Gordon Rottman's excellent book, The Berlin Wall and the Intra-German border 1961-89.

Another good visual reference of uniforms is Osprey's Soviet Block Elite Forces by Steven J. Zaloga and James Loop published in 1985.

Hello all - I wanted to follow up with this thread and let everyone know that Frank Bartel has now published his Book III - Auszeichnungen Ziviler Ministerien und Zentraler Staatsorgane der DDR, dated 2013.

Frank Bartel sent me a autographed advance copy and I received it in the postal mail today. I have to say there are some interesting medals, badges and pins in the catalogue that I have never seen before.

Hello all - I just received a surprise package in the mail today. It is Frank Bartel's latest DDR reference badge book, which he also autographed for me. His latest book Band VII Auszeichnungen der Gesellschaft für Sport und Technik 1952 - 1990, which was recently released in 2014.

Hello all - last night and this morning I went through Frank Bartel's latest book Band VII Auszeichnungen der Gesellschaft für Sport und Technik 1952 - 1990, and bottom line I saw some badges and pins I had not seen before. This book is like his others where he shows pictures of the items with prices. Not a lot of history unless you are trying to find a time period for items you have in your collection. This book is a must have for GST collectors and others who may have some GST pieces in their collection (like me...Ernst Schneller... :-) ). His book for sure showed some rare items. Overall a good reference to have.

Thanks for the news of these two books. Despite the short comings listed by the reviewer I am sure they will be of interest to many of the forum members. Besides, the poster book leaves room for someone to expand on the research that went into producing the book.

I agree with you about the posters. I know that the poster collecting community is huge and also unique from the stand point in seeing some very interesting posters and some very old posters.

There is another new book that is out.

Shortly, there will be a New York Times review.

In the interim, I'll just jump to the chase ...

The book is "Beyond The Wall". The author is Justin Jampol. He is a contributor here, and also is proprietor of the Wende (Turning Point) Museum in California.

I think this is going to prove to be one of those books that has no equal. Justin has the most historic museum pursuant the former DDR anywhere in the world (In my humble opinion); and the book should prove to be a virtual treasure trove relevant any and all aspects of the day to day lives of the people that lived in what was formerly East Germany.
