Per what Dave H. was explaining, if I understand him correctly, that would be correct Dave, if it is VOPO. However I'm not sure in this case, because the wearer looks very Canadian to me .

One thing that might be worth mentioning is how the DDR Ushanka differed from that of their Russian Brethren. The Ushanka utilized by the DDR was basically the same for both enlisted and officers, with the exception of the General Officers. So there was one type of winter headwear, differentiated as to rank class by the type of insignia. On the other hand, there were destinct differences between the enlisted and officer Ushankas worn by the Russian soldier during the Cold War era. Ensignia alone was not the only descriptive difference.

        RE: Ushanka w/ Staatswappen

Just for clarification, here is a DDR Ushanka (NVA Volksarmee) with the Staatswappen.

          Hi Michael,
Interesting you should say that "wearer looks very Canadian"...you are the second person to infer that everything is not kosher with this pic....
This pic was taken from a big group of 1989/1990 end of the Berlin Wall shots on a web-based photo resource site....
I originally thought it came from a book, but I had so many pics on my hard drive, it took a while to straighten them out...
I know you CID types never sleep...
          Cheers,
          Dave

            Hi Dave,

Actually, I mistakenly thought the bloke was your son. My error. Definitely not military, whoever he is/was - unless of course undercover Stasi? Man, I've really got to get some sleep.

            Cheers,

              Just to clarify:
NVA Officers/ career soldiers Ushankas : Twill exterior material
NVA short service soldiers Ushankas: Wool exterior material

Police Ushankas are predominently with twill exterior material, although occasionally you can find them in wool, to go with the older style police OR's uniform, these are not common.

Hi David, presumably this was because the short service soldier wore the Wool Tunic and Pants as well? I have to confess I've not seen the wool NVA Ushanka, although I think the outer shell of the Volkesmarine example I posted might be constructed of that material, unlike all my other versions. I'll have to keep my eye out now for another one of these wool Ushanka winter hats in grey colour for my collection. Geez, this collecting stuff never ends.

                          ER: Breeding Hats

Yikes. I would have responded sooner, but I had to first dig out from under these guys, and then engage the services of Cpt. Kirk and his Starship Enterprise crew to quawsh these breeding things. I really hate it most when I first enter my room and they all stare at me. Kind of unnerving.
