I believe the code you are referring to is the number stamping?

That shows the size of the helmet and the year it was made. It also shows something else too, but I can't remember.

Anyway, it says that your helmet is a size II, which I believe is medium? (Correct me if I am wrong). It also says that your helmet shell is made in 1964.

I don't think the liner is a replacement. I think it is the original liner, judging by the age of the helmet and the type of liner. I think you have a model 1 helmet on your hands. Defiantly looks like it received another coat of paint over the original factory paint though.

Quite a nice piece I must say.

The Roman numeral does indicate the shell size which is a medium. But the issue here is that there are two numbers which could be the date: 72 and 64. Normally we would have one number indicating the month -if I remember correctly- and then the year. But 72 cannot be. I agree that it is unusual and I would have no idea how to explain it. A mistake? Was it meant to be 12?

Thanks for the answer Daniel John and iannima .you are corect about the meaning of the numbers.the strange thing is that the helmet has received a new paint job but also the inside has received the new same paint, the number 2 for the size and the number of the date 64 are much more blurred than the 72 the 72 stamp is fresher.and why is there no paint on the liner.they need to removed the liner for this paint job.and normal they replaced the liner for the newer model if i have correct.

What iannima says possibly is the 72 (12) stamp a mistake.

        More opinions please

There are other "64" dated helmets out there with this type of markings. This one was posted here some years ago with the same question as yours (note the number of responses it received back then): http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=214813

I recall seeing at least one more example like this posted here since then, but can't locate that particular post at the moment.

I think your example proves that '64' is indeed the year stamp, and not the middle number (In the case of David Stone's helmet, it was more ambiguous, since his middle number was '58'). However, in the absence of authoritative references on the subject, it's really anyone's guess as to what that middle number actually indicates.

My own guess is that it's a lot number. Perhaps they introduced this 'process improvement' in 1964, found it to be needlessly cumbersome, and quickly abandoned the practice? The M56 was about to undergo some major changes at the time, so a little experimentation in refining the production protocol would not have been out of the question.

Hmm, I believe that the bottom number is the year of manufacture as well. I also have a helmet, and the bottom number is 65, which I believe is 1965. The dealer I also bought it from, Growen, says that it was made in 1965. The middle number is a mystery to me as well. I have never understood what the middle number actually means. If anyone would be kind enough to inform us, I'll definably be interested.

If I remember well from my past WWII collection, the german M35 helmet also shows 2 numbers embossed onto the shell ; the lower number is the helmet head size (leather) ; the higher one is the size of the steel shell. The diffrence between the 2 numbers is always 8 !
I do not know whether it has something to do with our matter here, but as you can see, the difference between 64 and 72 is 8 !!

Here's a couple of extra shots of the helmet. I think the liner was a refurbishment which would make it later than the helmet shell? When was the decal introduced?

I believe some of these helmets had the liner rivets removed (during refurbisment) and the holes plugged and filed flat before repainting. The out-line of the holes can sometimes be seen through the paint? Any ideas? Thanks Roy.
