Hello, everyone. I got a pair of Stasi warrant officer shoulderboards for free the other day and I was wondering. During East Germany, Was the Stasi apart of the NVA or did it operate as seperte group all together?

It was its own military organization. Their branch insignia color is a kind of maroon color.
Though they did where deemed warranted, infiltrate the other separate military organizations. There are Grenztruppen, Zoll and even NVA (Signals comes to mind) uniforms that are marked MfS.
Also, it was always rumored Stassi were covertly implanted in the other branches just to keep an eye on things.
