              Mike,

What kind of material is the piping on your hat made from? Is it badge cloth, twisted cord like mine, or something else?

It's mainly a combination of dumb luck and insanity.

Dumb luck in the sense that we have been fortunate enough on a few occasions to stumble across some guy selling off his stuff, or spot something on Ebay before anyone else does. It involves a lot of asking sellers on Ebay if they have any early items. Once in a while they say yes!

Insanity in the sense that you've got to be willing to spend what it takes. Competition for early & high end NVA items is getting more intense all the time, and more & more sellers are getting savvy. Bargains are getting harder & harder to find.

And it takes a lot of time. I've been collecting since the wall came down, so in large part, I've assembled my collection (as Johnny Cash put it) "one piece at a time."

                  Subdued Generals

                  Rick,
My piping is like black badge material...no twisting and it is black...not gray. Mike

I got the the original General's tunic from Sigmund Stefan...It was listed publicly and it was expensive at the time. He is still a big dealer. The hats I got from a private collector and they were expensive too. I had a whole lot of trouble paying since they didn't take paypal. Getting this stuff isn't for the faint hearted. There was a dealer some of us used to buy from, and he was a little flakey at times. Then, when we all had a bunch of paid orders in, he went into a hospital (it was claimed), and it took me almost two years to get the stuff. I think I finally got it because I said I was going to Germany and I had his address and I was going to look him up. When we post this stuff it may look like we have color piped uniforms, early issue items like cookies but I have sweated and pulled my hair out numerous times trying to get it. Of course some deals go down without a hitch. Scholthack ( on Ebay) is a good example of great dealer who often has early stuff. I could go on blah blah blah ....but I will end here. Mike
